Balancing Climbing Training with School and Exams

For young climbers, juggling organised training with school and exam periods can feel like a constant battle. As we approach the busiest part of the school year,  it’s important to think about what that will look like. With a little balance and forward planning, it’s possible to keep progressing on the wall while staying on top of schoolwork.

Here are a few useful tips:

Prioritise

During busy periods of study, or exam blocks, it’s okay to temporarily reduce training volume. Focus on quality over quantity — shorter, more intentional sessions can be just as effective.

Schedule your Exercise

Plan study and climbing as if they are “appointments” in the week. Even a quick climbing session to exercise your body and do something you enjoy can act as a brain break and help manage stress.

Don’t Forget to Rest!

There is no substitute for sleep! Sleep and recovery are crucial for both academic and athletic performance. Try to keep your bedtime routine consistent to keep energy levels up.

Communicate with Coaches

Keep your coach in the loop about upcoming exams or heavy school weeks. They can adjust your training to focus on lighter sessions and gain a better understanding of how much you are balancing.

Relieve Stress

Remember, climbing should support your wellbeing, not add pressure. Use it as a way to reset your mind, move your body, and return to study feeling refreshed.
